So I have just inherited my dads high school truck which was a 1979 f150 and I'm going to be rebuilding the truck but the 351 m that is in it is completely seised and so is the transmission so I want to throw in a 302w or 351w in it and I will probably be stroking the engines in the future so I want to know which engine I will get more power out of for a reasonably price
Both are popular engines, but there is no replacement for displacement in my opinion. Go for the 351W. I'd look for a later production roller block too, capable of a heck of a lot of power. I've got one sitting in the pile-O-crap waiting for a rebuild to got into the Platypus truck someday.
If I wanted cubic inches I would do a 460!! All day everyday!! They are making quality heads and stroker kits and good roller cams.
for a daily driver or a weekend cruiser I would do a factory roller 302! Cheap…parts galore…lighter weight/smaller package size in the engine bay. I would stroke it to a 331, AFR heads and a “rv” smaller duration/lift cam and you would be putting down 350+ hp…way more hp and TQ than any era OEM option for that truck.
I’ve built a few of them and they are strong little engine. The one in my mustang is about 460hp, revs to 6,500 and is almost to much for a 3,000 pound street car. The other one makes about 340hp but it has the power band way low for a bronco, still makes power all the way to 5,400.
