Off Throttle Ticking
I have a 1989 F150 4x4 with a 302 and a ZF S5-42 manual transmission swapped in from an F250. I have this ticking sound coming from the engine but it is not all the time. The ticking sound is mostly heard after you rev the engine up and let off the throttle. As the RPMs go back down to idle, the engine ticks pretty loudly, at idle the engine ticks for a few seconds and then pretty much goes away. When driving I cannot really hear the ticking when I am on the throttle but when I let off the throttle the ticking comes back. Has anyone had this happen before? Could this be a bad lifter? If it's a bad lifter why wouldn't it be doing it all the time? I do not ever get a low oil pressure light and the oil pressure gauge is always in the normal range.
Some history on the truck. A little over 5 years ago I had a rebuilt engine put in the truck and the engine now has about 35,000 miles on it. At some point the fan clutch went out but the coolant temp gauge wasn't working so I believe the engine over heated. After I fixed the temp gauge and replaced the fan clutch, the engine started leaking oil from multiple spots. At each oil change I would put a quart of Lucas stop leak in hopes that the engine would quit leaking. I think maybe I added that Stop Leak too often and gummed up a lifter, it's just strange that the ticking doesn't happen all the time. I put the recommended amount of Sea Foam in the engine oil and drove the truck for about 300 miles and changed the oil but it didn't seem to effect the ticking at all.
If it really is a lifter and I need to take the valve covers, intake manifold and fuel manifold off, should I just go ahead and replace the cam? Anyone have a write up replacing a cam? Anyone have any recommendations on a performance cam that is made for increased torque over horsepower?
Any help would be much appreciated, cheers!
Alex
