The 17 inch lock ring wheels are safe to run , this would get you a tall tire , tube type, hopefully you can get a tire shop to work on them. You can run the 17.5 one piece wheel but the tire selections for these wheels are shorter. I used a DRW style 17 inch Budd lock rings on my truck because I wanted 1 spare only. on the front I used a spacer to move the tire out closer to the fender. I mount my own tires because its 40.00 each to mount at my local tire shop, and I need the exercise. Please feel free to contact me if I can help. Good Luck MB
Does anyone have a lead on a good replacement for the front wheels? Or what adapter I need to be looking for? I’ve read about Stockton wheel making custom replacements but I’m sure that’s the most expensive option, I’ll have to check my local junkyard too, should have done a bit more research about my cheap project before purchasing it lol. Thanks everyone for the help by the way.
Your word “cheap” creates some roadblocks here. The cheapest would be to find some SRW 16” Firestone RHPs in a yard and call it done. That assumes you mount tires yourself or find a shop. Next cheapest would be the tubeless 17.5s I mentioned. Budd 71980 or Budd 73230 (they look the same) will be a bolt on fix, but 8-17.5” bias ply tires are expensive. These rims are 5.25” wide and won’t be right for wider radials. Adapters to let you use DRW type 17s on the front are expensive. Custom 17s like Mark has would be ideal with spacers, but also not cheap. Stockton Wheel is gone. American Wheel Specialist up in Kalispell, WA, did the custom work for Mark.
This is going to get a little complicated. Before you look for adaptors or spacers you need to determine the tire selection. If you want the cheapest look fo 750-17 see what you can find. Tornells were reasonable a few months ago. If you cant find any then you may opt for the 17.5. Next we can determine the spacer, and it may not be necessary. You could also use a 16 in wheel. Im also in the 406 give me call. I dont type so pounding this out on the key board is misery , eight 8 zero five 4 seven three.
Mark - with your uncanny ability to find oddball wheels in the “honey hole” yards around you, I’m gonna pitch both you guys the idea I originally had for you before AWS recentered your pair of 63780s. If other 63770/63780s can be found AWS could do the same and build a pair here with lesser offset than yours. That would eliminate need for the spacers.
If no other 63770/63780s are found the same could be accomplished by finding a common pair of 66520s, the 17” motor home wheels, and a pair of 1953/54 F-350 Express widow makers. The donor 17” Goodyear LW rims would work perfectly with the 53/54 widow maker centers to yield a great pair of shallow dished SRW 17s that resemble the DRW rears. Yes, I hear you saying “all ya gotta do is”, but it’s an ideal solution and not terribly expensive. Stu
