I have a 99 explorer with 4.0 SOHC. For a few weeks sometimes when i turn the wheel i get a whine. The colder it is outside the more frequent and louder the whine. It also happens while taking a turn.
Does anyone have any ideas of what this problem could be? I have been told that it could need a new steering rack or the it coould be the power steering pump. Has anyone had a problem like this? Please help, all responses appreciated.
If it is a belt whine. At this age you need to watch the belt tensioner for wear. This has a pattern of flying apart in the next year or two. Look for the white plastic bushing showing more on one side or the other.
Others have reported that Lucas tranny additive would quiet the pump. Use a turkey baster to suck out old fluid and then add new. You can't get much out unless you use a small tube to get to the bottom. Do this every day for a week to slowly thin out the old fluid before you put in any additive.
