Electrical problem?
my friend owns a 96 4.0L 4X2 Ranger (auto) and this morning he went to turn it on and it died and some black smoke started seeping out of the engine bay. I checked the fuse box in teh engine bay and all the fuses still appeared good. He cranked it again and it started then just as it started idling down after a few seconds, it died and all the lights in the instrument cluster came on. I'm assuming its an electrical short somewhere but not sure how to track it down.
Thanks in advance, Keith
If he keeps his foot on the gas slightly will it keep running, if so I would suspect a problem with the IAC (idle control valve). The best way to determine the cause is having the codes pulled.
