93' xlt ranger Thermostat problem

I just put a new thermostat in my 93 ford ranger xlt truck, and the heater inside gets warm but not hot, and then cools back down. Also the temp. gauge rises to the first line instead of rising quater way. If this is a problem, what would cause the heater not to get warm or to get hot. I let the truck idle from 20 to 30 minutes and the gauge just rises above cold mark. I thought it had a bad thermostat but i replaced it twice and it's not. Someone told me that my truck has a heat control valve that is on the heater hose, and he said that it could be that the valve isn't opening up...is this is true where is the valve located at and would this cause the temp. gauge not to rise where it belongs??

Thanks

Hello saturnsl2, and welcome to FTE!

If it has a heater valve I would think it would be located between the front of the engine and the heator core somewhere along the hose. When your motor is warm and the heater fully on, check to see if your intake hose going to the heater core is hot. Be careful and don't burn your hand.

As far as the motor not warming up, you might look at your radiator cap (if you have one).

Howdy...I have the same problem, and could not find such a valve when I was told that this might be what was happening. My truck is a 94 Ranger 2.3L.

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

It appears that there there is no heater valve on the this truck. Bob has found the Ranger forum and in that forum the problem appears to be the result of a blocked heater core. Several people posted problems along the same lines.
