1987 - 1991 Headlights?

Project Brownie needs new headlights or I need to clean the lenses on the old ones. I'm inclined to buy a pair on Amazon like this -
Amazon Amazon
, but was curious to hear if anyone recommends cleaning the lenses or going with LED's.

Thanks

Scott

Headlights

I tried to clean up the ones on a 94 and finally gave up. I purchased a new pair and also removed the grill.
I was able to repaint the inserts which really made the truck look a lot better in spite of the faded paint.

No experience what that brand. I bought a set of TYC and they were garbage. Neither adjuster worked so I took them back off after I cleaned up a set of OEM from the junkyard. It was too late to send them back so they are sitting on a shelf in the shed.

Try cleaning up the lens first, some buffing compound and a rotary tool can be very effectivre. If you do buy replacement fixtures DO NOT buy cheap things from Amazon, the reflector is junk and doesn't produce a focused pattern, you want something with a DOT rating. LED bulbs in the factory housings are a good upgrade.

^^^ Agreed, mine are DOT. The same applies to bulbs, brighter ≠ better.

I’ve had a mix bag. If you have everything for sanding and polishing then go for it.

Ve done the 600,1200, 2000 grit sanding then polish on two different vehicles. The first one looked great for about a year and then slowly turned back to brown. My Lexus has a hard cap over the lens and it’s stayed ok so far.

The polish kits you can buy are not that great. Project Farm did a test years ago on polish kits and most were not that great.

On my 1990 I was lucky enough to find a new pair of China one for $30 for the pair.

Ok, it looks like O'Reilly's sells TYC. Not cheap either at $160 each.

Thanks for the info.

In my experience, if you have LED bulbs everyone thinks you have your high beams on.

I did 500 grit, 800 grit, adhesion promotor and spray max clear coat on all my lights. I don't know if they're brighter at night, but they look better. I don't have recent pictures of the head light lenses, but these tail light pictures are two years apart.

Pictures from the day I did them. The passenger's side headlight is stained on the inside.

Did a bit more research -

O'Reilly's sells the TYC headlights for $160 each and Keystone for $220 each and Dorman for $200 each. All are allegedly DOT approved, but they have zero or minimal ratings.

Auto Zone doesn't sell headlights for the 87 - 91.

Advance sells KAI, said to be DOT approved, for $150 each, halogen bulbs, 5 year warranty. Part number for the driver's side is Part # FO2502104. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p/...=home_shipping

Jeff's Bronco Graveyard has some that are said to be DOT approved for $93 each but no ratings - https://shop.broncograveyard.com/198...uctinfo/34831/

Napa sells Dorman brand headlights for $278 each!

And the Amazon ones are $155 for the pair but do not appear to be DOT approved. They are highly rated at 4.7/5 with 166 reviews.

It's only a problem if the headlight lenses are heavily fogged which results in increaded glare outside the beam pattern or if the headlights aren't aimed properly. Far too many pickup trucks both older and newer have the headlights aimed too high.

Thx for the post Soup Bean! I've been considering the same as my headlights are slightly discolored - whereas the markers lights look almost new. After watching too many videos depicting the "sand and resurface" process I thought I'd give it a go instead of simply purchasing new lamps. I'll likely resurface the headlights over the weekend and see how well that works for Old Blue. Thx!
