Hello all its been awhile I have a new problem with my truck. I have a 80 351M 4sp 4x4. Ok, to get you up to speed: I was out playin around and went to launch my truck off line at about 2800rpm. At the time I had 2 broken leaf springs one on each side 2nd spring down. Well with that said u can imagine the wheel hop that occured. I ended up twisting the drive shaft off at the rear u-joint, there was a little metal missing from the rear end where the U-joint bolts up. Ok, since then I had new leaf springs put on and now I have a vibration that starts about 30mph and gets worse with speed. The vib is coming from underneath not noticable in steering wheel. I put new u-joints and rotated and balance tires. No change. The vibration can best be felt with clutch puched in or letting off of the gas but is always there. at 65mph it is a fast vibration and slows when speed decreases.
Yeah, it definitly sounds like a bent/unbalanced drive shaft. If you had it hit the deck while under power, it could have gotten slightly bent or lost a weight. You can take it to a driveshaft/u-joint specialist, and they can check the balance on it for you, and if it is not seriously bent or damaged, they can put new weights on there to get it back to proper specs. If it is too bent up, they can make you a new one (usually near 200, depending on weather a scrap one is available or not). Another thing to check would be the rear yolk coming out of the diff. It it lost too much medal in the mishap, it could also cause a small vibration, but I would be inclined to think yous lies in the shaft.
I know its been awhile. I am back on the project of getting rid of this vibration. I Changed the driveshaft and u-joints vibes are still there. vibration is noticed at 25mph and up gets worse with speed. With clutch pushed in vibrates feels like rear or tranny or transfer case not sure. I had tires rotated and balanced
