TTB 44hd vs TTB 50 Help

Hello, been reading the wealth of info/knowledge on this forum for many years.
Broke my driver axle ttb 44hd f-250 last year. Can't find replacement for the ttb 44hd so i bought one from ttb50. Length and inner shaft spline seems the same except for the spline on the short outer stub. U-joints are bigger as well. My question is can i just use manual locking hub from ttb50 so the spline can match with the short outer stub/axle or do i need to change out knuckle and spindle or anything else

According to what Spicer says, your axle is a Dana 44 UNLESS you have a "SNOW FIGHTER" plow prep package. heres a Dana 50 for comparison to the previous post. Notice how it says where to find the axle ID on the member

This came up not too long ago, last year maybe. I can not remember the outcome, but worth searching for.

Iirc, for TTB - no the 44HD components were not compatible with the 50. But I cannot remember for sure.

Might help to post up pictures as well. If I can find the thread in my subscriptions, I’ll post it up.

Torque king has a great web site for looking at parts as well, you can see what crosses over for compatibility.

What actually broke? I’ll be interested to hear where you get with this one way or the other.

Can't use d50 lockouts on your d44hd bc the d50 parts are larger diameter and won't fit in the hub. As I understand it, pretty much nothing between the two swaps.

Best bet is probably a junkyard for the correct stub shaft for the d44hd. Or, get a whole d50 and swap that in. You'll be less likely to break again. I'm just not completely sure the beams are the same length? I think they are, but can't tell you for sure.

TTB = twin traction beam. It's the four wheel drive version of Ford's Twin I-beam (TIB) front axle.

D44HD is a version of a TTB. Dana 44 heavy duty. They came in F-250's and were leaf sprung. Some F-250's came with the larger Dana 50 TTB instead, which is a little stronger.

Thanks boarding. You're correct. Lockout hub on the 50 is larger. Back to searching the junkyard

Found one on eBay by searching "D44HD stub"
Though it's only the outer stub. I bet you need the inner too?

I'm gonna pull this from my memory of 20 years ago when I was a junkyard addict, building all sorts of rigs with junkyard parts --- The d50 outers are the same as d60, the shaft outers are bigger than 44, the shaft itself is bigger than the 44, and it necks down to same size as the 44 to get into the differential. The the u joints are bigger in the 50 than the 44 and the 44hd has only the larger outers (hubs) with the rest of the sizing to be the same as reg 44. You can't make any 44 parts work on the 50 without modifications or sourcing the correct parts.

Awesome van. If it has a 44 currently, I'd simply source a complete 50 TTB assembly and put that in. It *is* an upgrade and would eliminate any of the bullshlt that you're going through now in sourcing parts. Also you should be able to find a 50 ttb assembly for cheap

I guess I didn’t hit post on this earlier this afternoon..
——————

That’s a nice rig.

“My question is can i just use manual locking hub from ttb50 so the spline can match with the short outer stub/axle or do i need to change out knuckle and spindle or anything else”

Sorry, I missed your specific question in the first post. AFAIK, the hubs are different from the 44HD and the 50 - no, the locking hubs from a 50 will not fit a 44HD.

I’d call torque king, see what they have available. They might be able to get the axle shaft you need.

Off topic, but another member on here built a hybrid between D44 and D50. Might be worth looking into, or swapping out to a more common D50. Seems to be a lot of those still out there, and parts for them. Although it looks like yours is coil sprung, not leaf’s. Carrick customs or Solo Motorsports have kits for those, might be worth your time to look into.

—————

Yes, the Dana 50 is the same as the 60 from the hubs outward.
