Apologize if this has already been asked...I had my Excursion upgraded to the Blue Top steering box and Borgeson shaft. No complaints about the set up. Truck is easier to keep straight now.
I was looking under the steering wheel and noticed that the firewall seal is gone...guessing that the mechanic left it off. Is there a solution that other folks have used that changed out their steering shafts? I'm assuming that the new one is a thicker diameter? I know I can 'rig' something up to keep the critters and noise out. I'd just like to do the cleanest looking job possible. Thanks!
I replaced the stock steering shaft with a borgeson unit in my driveway (went with a PSC box vice the bluetop, but they're the same from the steering shaft preceptive). The factory seal works with the new borg shaft just fine, didn't even need to be remove the seal actually.
I'm guessing you mechanic was rushing trying to beat "book time" and just snatched out the old shaft, the seal happed to stay stuck on it, then he slammed the new shaft in, impact gunned everything down and sent it out there door (great way to get paid two hours of your hourly rate for 30 minutes worth of work and all).
...
Yeah, I don't understand why he would remove something that didn't need to be removed in the first place. I know the old gear box was a pain to get out with a snapped bolt head, but that shouldn't have mattered either. I'll be giving him a call in the morning to see if I can get an explanation! Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Amen to that, though any time I take something to the shop, I try and ask a lot of questions so I have a better understanding of how things work, in the hopes that I might be able to do it myself next time. FTE has saved me a lot of money and taught me a lot about diy (and prevented several screw-ups).
