Need help, what went wrong?

I have a 92 Explorer 4 liter 4x4. Today it started making some strange noises while idling, then almost died. I turned the fan off, it was still doing it. Turned the defroster off and that seemed to be the cause of the problem. It smelled like something was burning. Anyone have any idea what needs fixing? I appreciate any help!

Unplug the connector on the compressor

The one that goes to the electric clutch. Sounds like compressor is jammed. This will allow you to use defrost and decide over winter if you want AC that bad.

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks guys, I disconnected the harness at the top of the compressor/clutch and everything seems to work. Does this just allow the belt to freely turn the compressor pulley (I don't know what it's actually called, the wheel on the compressor)? Also, what would happen if the AC were accidentally turned on, nothing? Thanks again!
