Hood hinge mounting

I'm getting ready to rebuild the front clip on my '67. Every piece has been completely destroyed by rust, and will be replaced with good used parts, refurbished to look new again.

The problem I'm having at the moment is with the stock hood hinges. The hood hinges will not maintain proper positioning and keep sliding back out, forcing the hood back up away from it's proper closed position. Looking at the hinges, it appears that the mounting system leaves a little something to be desired. From what I can see the bolts mount through the hinge on the innerside of the inner fender, and fasten to the outerside of the innerfender.

Is it possible to use some steel pipe or tubing on the back side of this fender, as a sleeve if you will to stop the fender from buckling when tightened? This is my first Ford build, so I'm not schooled on all the tricks to improve upon the factory setup.

Thanks,

Mark

you could try that, you will just have to try what you think to see if it works, but i can see your point you dont want to screw your inner fender up, i had to replace the hood hinges on my 75 f150 because the hood would not shoot properly i just got some from a junkyard for nothing and they worked great. good luck

Don't do anything drastic yet. The core support has no doubt collapsed a bit, putting the catch for the hood too low and also dragging the front fenders and grille down with it. This makes it hard to see the real problem at first, since everything still looks right from above. The trouble is you may be altogether missing an inch or more of your core support down where it attaches to the frame. The hood is attached back where everything is still in the right place or at least close and most likely isn't the root of the problem.

The area on the fender well that receives the hinge is already reinforced, supposed to be anyway. If it's not on yours then maybe more has rusted away than you think. There should already be a piece in there that does what you are talking about doing. It is not just attached through sheet metal.

Anyway get all your good parts in there before you you start messing with things too much. You might do something unnecessary, or worse. There's nothing wrong with the hoods on these trucks. Except perhaps that they weren't made out of stainless steel.

Thanks for the replies.

I never considered the rad support, and now that I think about it, that's probably 90% of the problem. The support in the truck right now is completely shot.

When I first picked up the truck a year or so ago, I attempted to get the hood re-aligned by messing with the hinges on the inner fenders. Every time I tightened them, the inner fender was showered with rust flakes, so I assumed that was a problem area.

Well, I've got all good parts waiting in the garage, and hopefully I'll tear into it over the winter.

Thanks, rmt for reminding me of the KISS principle.
