8" rear end

I am dropping a performance 460 into a 71 Ranchero that has an 8" rear end. Is the 8" rear end strong enough to take the abuse, or do I need to go to a 9"?

I think I would take a 10.25 out of a one ton.

I'd go with the 9 inch, and get some Strange or Moser axles made... you won't break them
Go atleast 33 spline and I know you won't

Well I'm gonna disagree with everyone and say that you will probably never tear up the 8in. They are built just about as tough as a 9 is. I had an 8in. in an old 67 mustang I used to own. It had a pretty hot little 302 and a full spool in the rear and I never had a single problem. In my opinion the 8inch is highly underated.

I agree the 8 inch is underrated
But with the big block, and the extra torque, Id go with the 9'' just for added security from breakage

Also, you can get way more gear combos and find axles and such cheaper/easier
