I don't really know how these work and the service manual doesn't show service instructions, are these fixable? A quick search on the internet returns that 6V original horns don't exist anymore.
It looks okay but all I hear is a clicking, I know the button and the wiring is good because the PO hooked a cheap crappy 6v horn up rather than fix this one.
Someone also helpfully rounded off the slot screw inside the center nut.
Poke around inside to ensure that all the connections and wires are intact.
The adjustment screws are touchy - a little gets you a lot of noise. I find that messing with these in the basement on a winter day - using a 12 battery for power - usually results in the most earsplitting sounds of success.
It also causes other residents to spill things and yell stuff.
I redid both of mine. They are not difficult to repair, just a bit fussy.
Finish taking them apart and clean up all of the dirt and rust and spider webs. Check the wires and make sure there are breaks or loose connections. Polish the contacts with steel wool or scotch Brite. Cut new gaskets if the originals can't be reused. Reassemble.
On the bench, use jumper cables from a 12V battery. If I remember correctly, I hooked the ground to one terminal, then touched the positive to the other. Adjust the screw and try again. The actual area or sweet spot is very narrow, so you only adjust a small bit each time. Repeat until you get a weak sound; at that point, you are close. Adjust, test, adjust, test, etc. be prepared-when you hit the spot, these suckers are LOUD!
Once you get the loud sound, you can fine tune it to get a relatively pleasant sound.
