Should I leave my hubs locked during winter? I know i shouldnt drive in 4x4 on the road, but im not sure about leaving the hubs locked. I put some 70lb tube sand bags in 2 old tires for added weight in the back and packed some snow for more. Any tips, this is my first time driving a truck in winter.
if the roads are snowy and slippery, then by all means, leave them locked in. but if everything bear's up, and/or your gonna do alot of highway driving, it would pay to unlock them. when thier locked, your turning your whole front drive train, weather your in 4x4 or not. and i think you already know, but don't use 4x4 on dry pavement.
remember, 4x4 helps you go, but doesn't help your stop, or steer, use caution, and if you get a chance, "play" with your truck in an empty, snow covered parking lot. it'll get you used to what it takes to break your truck loose, or how hard it can be to stop.
i've been using winter weight, off and on every winter since i've been driving a truck, and haven't knowticed any difference in the stopping. the weight makes a big difference in traction, and it help keep the rather light rear end, behind you in the corners.

If a pick-up it cannot hurt to have the weight past the rear axle.
I put the weights in front of the axle, should i move them? I was worried that they might fall out when i gas it(I like to have fun). I got a bit of snow packed down for added weight(thank got it snowed heavy, didnt have to shovel at all). Ill try playing in an open lot, we gots lots of them.
try an empty parking lot, they're fun
learning how your truck handles in low traction situations can actualy make you a better driver
if you put the weight behind the axle, the rear carries more of it, so it will help traction more
if you consider the leverages, and pivot points involved, you'll understand
Buy a non ford and just drive the crap out of it
You wreck it? get out, walk away like it was never yours
Or for that matter, cut that one up, and put it in the back of your Ford for added weight
Thats a good use for a chebby

our 77's seen snow packed in it every winter since it was new. hasn't rusted out yet. the salt from the roads will kill them much quicker. as long as the snow is frozen, it cannot rust your body out.
well i usually throw a couple tractor weights in the back of my truck with studded tires sense its a 2wd, the extra wieght always helps the studded tires on ice.
