Has anyone actually used it? Is it like Echo or whatever Amazon calls their Alexa devices? If it is I would like to have WLSAM app added so I can listen in the morning. Does it work the same?

It is mostly the same as having an Echo, with the exception of some skills and APIs like Lists not being available in 3rd party devices anymore.
The documentation is not clear, but if you use Android Auto or Car Play it will make you disable it to set up Ford+Alexa. I think the intent is that you would use this as your smart phone to car interface instead, but once set up you can use both. I use Amazon music, and the Android Auto interface does not let you search, so I like being able to just say "Alexa, play Albuquerque by Weird Al Yankovic". It would be nice if doing so actually sent the controls to Android Auto's version of the app to see and control, but it doesn't. First World Problems...
Since I never use Car Play and don't care for its phone use, I may switch it out. That explains why I no longer see it as an option since Car Play is active.
I have used it for home automation things as well as doing a broadcast message to the Alexa devices at home. (Typically that is either a “I forgot my phone” or getting the kids’ attention when they don’t answer my messages.)
