Rancho 9000x ????
I just received my new Rancho shocks, and I noticed that they are not strapped colapsed. I can pull the piston out and push it back in (with resistance), but it stays collapsed by itself. Is this normal?
I just want to make sure this is normal before I put them on.
Thanks..

Yes. Why would you think that they would re-extended? They do not have any springs or anything like that in them. :-)
Not real savy on suspension...But thanks to this site, I'm learning!!!
Thanks Monsta...By the way, I am getting ready to get the Flowmaster 40 put on. Love how it sounds on your X... Did you have to get a new tailpipe put on? The shop told me they couldn't use the existing tailpipe since it didn't line up with the smaller muffler...
Thanks again...

Gas charged IFP (Internal Floating Piston) type shocks will return to maximum extension due to the pressure of the gas charge(nitrogen) in them. These shocks are common in off road applications such as motorcycles/snowmobiles due their excellent damping characteristics, resistance to fade, tunability, and the ability to rebuild them.
Like you, I find it a little disturbing when the shocks don't extend back to max. length, but Monsta is right, for your application they shouldn't. They are designed to dampen the effect of the spring, without really altering the ride or spring rate of the suspension. The effort required to extend the shock (rebound) should be roughly equal to the effort required to compress it and should be linear.
I've got a lot of experience with the IFP gas-charged type shocks, not as much with the regular hydraulic type, but if you have any more questions, let me know.

Hog S$*t
They used my stock tail pipe. Sounds like they are just trying to get a few extra $$ out of you.
Thanks.

One question though... When installing the red boot, I slid it onto the shock tube only about a half an inch. The other end fits perfectly at the end of the piston. Is the boot supposed to go further down the shock tube, or just enough to put the strap on and tighten down? It seems like alot of rubber boot stacked up instead of being nice and straight.
Thanks..
