It won't shift from first to second, but second, third and fourth gears work fine. Reverse also doesn't work and when engaged a clicking noise, like a zip tie sound is heard.
I have limited experience with transmissions and I highly doubt that total replacement is necessary.
the trannys you have, and I have... arn't that great. It is not uncommon for the tranny to blow < 100k miles. Did you change the tranny fluid and filter often? did you do a lot of towing?
Odds are if something is wrong, you'll have to get a new tranny. I'm not a mechanic, but if they somehow find a way to just replace a part inside of it to fix the problem, I think it would only save you a few hundred b/c the labor will still be insane. It would be worth it to then just get a new tranny.
Its a 93, I thought that was a SOHC motor, in any case that doesn't matter, its the same tranny. The thing is that I am sure that I don't need a total tranny replacement, as a new development has arisen, it sometimes will shift just fine, other times it won't move.
Manual 1 does not work when it won't shift normally, it makes the clicking noise.

It sounds like you lost a clutch band. I rebuilt mine for $250.00 but I don't recommend it for the novice weekender. If you do decide to tackle it, let me know and I'll gladly give you any help I can from my experience.
