Hey yall, coming at ya with a few questions. I got a project in mind and i’d like to get an idea on just how far over my head i’m in.
I got a 1991 F150, single cab 8 ft bed with a 300I6 and an m5od trans, 2.73 rear end. Thing is, I wanna tear all of that out, and drop in a carbureted 351 mated to a zf5 trans( If at all possible). Rear end swap too, 3.55s possibly, and in the future, 4wd swap the front end.
Now I’m not looking for a step by step, or all the details included, but does anyone know if this is possible? Any of yall don’t something like this before? Not big into wrenching but i’m learning everyday and I want to make a sweet rig to beat on for the summer. Any direction or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.
It's definitely possible. But it's honestly going to be easier to get a 4wd manual truck and start there. It will probably be cheaper.
If you do go the way of swapping it all, you could probably find a wrecked or junk 4wd truck to pull most of that from. At least both axles and the suspension bits. Then sort out your engine and trans later.
I’d keep your eyes open for that transmission. The small block gasser ZF units aren’t terribly common. I don’t believe the ZF was even available in an F150. It will swap in though. We scored a 2wd ZF from the salvage yard for $200 out of an F250 with a 351. It replaced the dead E4OD in my friends 1993 F150 flare side.
