Ive always had the FX4 package on my trucks but it has always been something that I’ve struggled with because I’m only buying it for the next guy. I personally don’t see any value in skid plates, rancho shocks or hill descent. Maybe the FX4 decal is more attractive than the 4x4 decal.(if I don’t get fx4 on my next truck I’d likely remove the 4x4 decal).
How many would pay extra to get the FX4 package on the used market? Does anyone ever use the Hill Descent feature?
I wouldn’t. It has some value but not enough to matter. By the time you sell, the shocks will need to be or will have been replaced. Down hill can be added and skid plates arent worth much.
personally, i feel that fx4 sticker is more of an embarrassment. I ordered my current truck without it.
If you aren't going to use it, even potentially, I wouldn't bother with the option. That's my opinion. If you never drive off-road, the likelyhood that you'd need skidplates is almost zero. If you aren't on steel trails, you will probably never use hill descent control.
My next truck will likely be a Tremor, because I like sidewall with my tires, and because I occasionally do get into situations where I want the extras it comes with. I can't guarantee I'll BE in those situations, but if I am it would be better to have the tools. But again, that's ME - I have property way out in the woods, and part of it gets and sometimes stays pretty wet, and it's wooded so there's occasionally downed trees I need to drive over because I don't always have my chainsaw. It's days like those that I REALLY miss my PW.
So I'd say it depends on what your use for the truck really is. If you have the money and just want it, then get it. But if you're on a budget and trying to pinch pennies where you can, and you just WON'T use an option...I wouldn't bother with adding an option to a truck you're ordering. If I am sitting down to order a truck, I'm building it for ME, not the next guy.
I would pay extra to get skid plates, but have no use for hill descent control. The FX4 decal looks a little better than the 4x4 decal, but I would not pay extra for the FX4 decal. I also would not pay extra for the Rancho FX4 shocks.
FX4 shocks on my ‘22s were not Ranchos and I don’t use the hill decent. Instead of using hill decent, I shift the transmission manually and use the brakes.
Sold the FX4 tires for $500 and the shocks for $50. I do like the skid plates even though they’ve never made contact with anything and I like the look of the FX4 stickers better than the 4X4 stickers.
It was just easier for me to get the skid plates in the FX4 package, than to buy them individually and install them myself and ended up costing about the same or less.
The FX4 package should be limited slip front differential, rear locker, skid plates and stickers!
I got the FX4 on our F150 for the "skid plates". Not much to them. But the guy who bought the truck, who was going to do a 6" lift and monster tires really got a bang out of the stickers, it was a feature that helped sell the truck. I didn't get FX4 on the F250, and I peeled off the 4x4 stickers as soon as I got it home. To each their own!
For what it is worth, I tow a large RV and also live in the northeast. Heavy duty shocks and hill descent control provide a benefit there. Limited slip in the northeast is good to have. And skid plates? Just once I crossed what I thought was a grassy field and heard a crunch. Nice skid marks on the plates. So you never know. For the cost, cheap insurance. And who cares what the sticker says. The only one really paying attention to that is you.

I've gotten the FX4 package before for the skid plates, but unless you are offroading with your truck they aren't doing anything 'cept reducing your payload. The shocks aren't anything special and are a wear item anyhow. Hill decent?....again, only if you are truly offroading could I see it as much of a benefit. I use my truck to tow my 31' RV trailer, so I'm not going anywhere more difficult than a gravel road with it - for real offroading I use my restored '78 FJ40 Landcruiser.
To answer the question, I place a zero to minimal value on the FX4 package when looking to purchase......unlike 4x4 which would be a deal breaker for me. Everything in the FX4 package is easy enough to add except maybe the hill decent but again, that isn't something I'd care to have.

FoMoCo/Rancho labeled shocks are a thing of the past. They eliminated that back around 2018MY. They have been standard looking black Ford shocks ever since. Claimed to be "offroad tuned" for the FX4 pkg. So yeah, the shocks offer very little value to the pkg. In 6 years owning a 2019 w/FX4, I only used the Hill Descent control once, that was on the street just to see what it was like. Pretty much to me, the only thing if value from the pkg are the skid plates. 17-22 you could purchase the skids ala carte.
It is a misunderstood pkg by casual buyers, so they often think it's more than it actually is, increasing value in their minds. For those shopping these trucks, the inclusion of FX4 guarantees (does not include) that it is also equipped with a rear locker, since it is a prerequisite.
My bad. It comes with a locking rear differential.
It doesn’t come with it in the package, but requires the option separately.
The FX4 is a waste of money to me. Always has been. Ford dropped the $100 skid plate option hoping to force more people to buy the FX4 package to get them too.
Didn’t order hill descent on the last few trucks, but towing the ATV and material flatbed trailer from the highway down the old road to the river is much mo betta… set the speed and steer. Brakes and gearing with exhaust brake doing their thing. Not daily driving or true off road, but the frequency is enough for me to enjoy the tricks this dog can do. I would order it if given the chance. But our rigs tend to be what is on the lot at the time.
