I have a 1989 F150, 302, ZF s5-42(swapped from F250) and 4x4. I have this knocking sound that seems to be coming from either the back of the engine or the front of the transmission where the clutch is. The knocking sound happens mostly when I am coasting in gear or when I am just idling in neutral. In the past 5 years I have put in a rebuilt engine and transmission along with a new clutch. I checked and topped off the fluids in the engine, transmission and transfercase. could it be a cracked flywheel? The symptoms of a cracked flywheel should be different shouldn't it?
Anyone have this happen? Any ideas on how to diagnose this without removing the transmission?
I'm not an expert on ZF5s or 8th gen trucks, but I remember people complaining about the dual-mass flywheels causing noises. I think the solution is to change it to a single mass flywheel. Let's see what other folks have to say about it.

Thanks for the reply Prototypemech but I am pretty sure my truck has a single mass flywheel. You can't machine a dual mass flywheel or most people won't do it, and when I got my clutch changed out I am pretty sure they turned down my flywheel.
