Hello, i don't get to this site often enough any more. I have a 1947 1/2 ton panel "Seibert ambulance conversion". First panel I have seen with rear side windows. The truck is in pretty bad shape so I won't feel bad about cutting it up for a total custom build. Planning to remove the 36" stretch and make it stock wheel base again. i would love to change the front clip to a 40 or 41, anyone have the sheet metal available? I have looked at one piece fiberglass noses but would rather work with vintage steel.
Also, curious if the rear side windows make it still considered a panel truck, or should I be calling it something else?
Boy, if you bought the one that was for sale forever on CL (iirc) you are one ambitious fellow! Much encouragement will be found here. Maybe post pics so we can see what you are starting with. Stu
We are probably talking about the same one, it really is a basket case! I have photos posted here when I first shipped it home from Texas about two years ago and joined this site for information. I'm having trouble finding those pictures or moving them. i think the original thread was called "47 AMBULANCE" or "47 PANEL DELIVERY" around Nov-Dec 2022
I don't know if I could bring myself to shorten it back up again. Building it into a 4 door Surburban-like, limo-type vehicle would be pretty cool. Certainly original. You'd be the only one at any show or cruise night you went to.
I've considered that as well. I have had it for over two years now and the plan has changed several times, I never know what I'll do until I start doing it.I bought it when looking for a vintage truck cab for my 94 dually 4x4, but turns out that trucks frame is rotten. The dually's motor will now be used for another project and will try to sell the axles.
This 47 would make a unique low-rider as a 4-door with suicide doors! The only reason I consider shortening it back up is the wooden inner structure in the rear half is completely rotten and the suicide door frames are wood. This old girl is already a huge undertaking, re-constructing the door frames out of steel would nearly double the effort.
When I do settle on a plan and get it started, I will keep posting pics as i go. Currently my projects are still waiting as my small shop is tied up with customer projects for a while yet. Just finishing up a 34 Chevy sedan custom I've been building for three years, 36 Olds in the other bay about to get started, and a few others booked for next year. This truck and my two convertibles have to wait a little longer.
Actually, no. It's still rotting in the lot. between health issues and other customer projects I'm running behind on my own projects. I have pulled in my '72 LTD convertible as it can be done over the winter, hopefully debut it this spring at a few local cruise ins.
the truck is still in the plans and will keep you posted when it gets under way.
