please help!! another E4OD problem...
truck is a 1993 F-150 w/ 300 I6 and has around 89,000 miles on it. do not know when tranny fluid was changed last but when i checked it, it had a few bubbles in it like when u spit but not whipped or frothy. all other gears shift fine besides the hard shift.
i searched the forums and found this a rather commen problem and i quote
"I had exactly the same problem. When the torque converter lockup clutch wears out it starts to slip. That slippage is detected by the computer. The computer sets the internal pressures higher to try and make the clutch engage. Higher pressures cause shifts to be very hard."
my question is, what is a TC lock up clutch? and would it cause my 1st gear to go out on me? i didnt notice any slipping before the harder shifts started tho.
When the clutch goes bad, you get classical Torque Shudder between 45 and maybe 55mph, a gentle vibration on moderate acceleration which causes the clutch to unlock.
The slipping clutch will cause heat and debris in the fluid which eventually will cause damage. The shifts will also come harder as things get stuck or the pump tries to compensate.
My opinion(I am NO expert) is that you are in the terminal stages of failure. The debris has gotten to the point where either solenoid, valves or worse, hard parts are failing. This would explain your problem from a standing start.
Your problem is probably too far gone to be cured with a fluid change etc. Probably a rebuild in your future. Figure on paying between $1500 and $3000 depending on what is broken and local rates.
I would not drive anywhere that you cannot get help easily for the next few days. I would guess it won't last that long anyway. In other words don't go on a camping trip in the mountains in the snow.
Good Luck, and sorry,
Jim Henderson
