I posted a while ago regarding my 2000 Ranger V6 3.0 being reluctant to start, at times. Sometimes she'd wilingly turn over, sometimes, not, lugging over very slowly if at all. Id try her again a couple times and she'd eventually start.
(i live in So. Cal. so cold weather aint the problem)
The wires (motorcraft) and plugs (autolite) were replaced a month ago.
Well, last night after driving her for about 1/2 hour, I reach my destination, and in five minutes get back in the truck to head home...She does'nt want to start and lugs over very slowly when I turn the key. Suddenly I see smoke rising from under the hood(smells like burnt electrical something) I have a friend start the truck a few minutes later, while I'm watching with the hood up to see where the smoke is coming from...they turn the key and she starts right up. No smoke. No nothing.
I think its gotta be the starter. I plan to test it. But I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience and has any other clues into what might be happening. Also where is a good, cheap place online (or off) to buy a starter.
If the oil filter is over the starter, as it is on my 94 3.0, then it could be similiar to a problem I was having. Turned out that sloppy changing of the oil filter drops oil directly onto the starter contacts and into the starter motor itself. Try disconncting battery, getting some Castrol Superclean (awesome degreaser) and cleaning it up real good, top and bottom if possible. Let it dry and try. I cleaned mine, worked a while, but I ended up replacing it anyway. I am very careful now. I have 193,000 miles and change my oil monthly.
