Hello ford gurus. I am new here. I am working on a 1974 F100 custom with a 360cid, rear wheel drive, 2 barrel carb and automatic transmission. Whenever I am shifting gears to reverse and drive, there is a banging sound coming either from the rear end or drive shaft. I changed the universal joints and grease up all the zerks I could possibly see in the drive shaft. Any help is highly appreciated.

@CathedralCub I think that sloppyness might be the reason why it's knocking/clunking. The rear end of the truck is jerked up, most likely I need to take off extra shims on the leafspring may be? When I did change the universal joint, the one connecting to the pinion was cracked wide open. Thank you so much and happy holidays
@CathedralCub yeah man I did change all three of them, some sort suggest greasing the slip yoke might eliminate the clunking noise
I would park on level ground, block all the tires on both sides, put it in Neutral, then see how much play is in the rear end before chasing that. It can't hurt lubing it up, but you may as well find the actual problem first then lube the slip yoke while you have it apart to do other things.
Here's a fun diagnostic step: With your foot firmly on the brake the whole time, put it in drive. Clunk. Put it in Reverse. Clunk. Put it in drive. Clunk. Put it in Neutral. No clunk? Put it back in Drive. No clunk or very little clunk? . . . or still big clunk?
