Yes, and that is what I used. I popped the switch out to take a look at it. There were 4 wires going to it. Using a ohm meter it seems that the two end wires are for the illunimation. The two center wires respond to the three different positions on the switch with different resistance. Tried applying the brake firmly. No Change. 4WD Low Range still lit on the dash no matter what postion switch is in. Ttied reverse than forward. No Change.

Stuck in 4WD LOW

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 00:28 AM (EST)]If you are on a firm surface (not loose soil) then you might have to allow the truck to roll forward some, and then roll backward in reverse. While rolling in both directions, turn the steering wheel left to right several times. What is the temperature where you are?

Tried that already. Drove around 10 miles on wet roads to get from the snowed in parking lot I was, where it got stuck in 4WD low to my house. The switch was in 2WD the entire time. Put it in reverse went backwards 20 feet. No change. Temperature during day was around 35 now it is around 28. I also went under the truck and inspected the electrical connections on the transmission and the transfer case. Everything is dry/unfrozen.

Stuck in 4WD LOW

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jan-03 AT 00:50 AM (EST)]I had a similar incident with my 2001 Excursion (V-10 also) when it was new. I was pulling a trailer on Donner Pass (7200 feet near Lake Tahoe in California). I stopped to take it out of 4 low and had a devil of a time getting it to shift out of 4 low until I figured out that I needed to leave it in gear and firmly apply the brake. Sorry I could not help you sort it out...maybe someone else has an idea...Ken.

Not trying to start a flame war here, but that is precisely why I didn't get ESOF!

What usually happens is, water gets in the connectors to transfercase, transmission and shorts out ,sometimes blows the fuses.
You must also be completely stopped with brake applied, because the vss
sensor is sending info to the 4wheel drive module which will prevent the relays from shifting.

Water also gets to the relays in the engine compartment (aux3 relays)
I bet if you can get the truck in a heated garage it will start working once it dries out.
We always used to take the connectors apart and put grease in them to prevent the water from doing this.
This not to say this infamous or common problem will ever be fixed

Because I hate ESOF just because of this situation!

Good luck !@

It is out. Combination of patience with the brake on firmly, letting it roll back and forth. I had the door open and while in reverse, stopped with the brake on I heard something under the truck moving. Shifted into neutral and the 4WD Low light went off.

Thank you for getting me un-stuck.

PS: Going to put some grease on the electrical connections under the truck now.
