I picked up a 1991 Econoline Club Wagon XLT the other day and when I popped the hood, two things immediately popped out at me. 1. The oil dipstick was missing. 2. There was a large hose that was disconnected just hanging there in thin air. I put my finger over the end and it appeared to be drawing a slight vacuum. It was getting dark, so I couldn't track it's source OR where it was disconnected from.
The engine is a 302, I believe, based on the VIN. The hose is a little over an inch in diameter and is located on the passenger-side of the engine bay. At first, I thought that it might be a crankcase ventillation tube, but I didn't see any obvious place for it to plug into the air intake system. There is a similar hose running from the oil fill spout to the air breather, but I didn't see any other hose connections on the air breather. Any ideas for when I get home tonight and tackle it again?
Also, anybody have a part # on a dipstick for this vehicle/motor combo?
I am no expert here but it sounds like the air inlet tube for the pollution control air pump. I have a 92 F-150 with a 5L. There is a metal flex tube about 1" in diameter laying on top on the passenger side inner fender. It does suck in air. This hose is connected to a round plastic can and has a hose (or 2) that goes from this can down to the air pump driven by the fan belt. Might be what you are looking at. If so, it does not connect to anything. It should be tucked down out of the way and pointing towards the rear. I can't help with the dipstick but a good auto parts store or Ford dealer should be able to get you one.
