break pad falling off

Last night i tried to unload a hay bale military style, and my passenger side break pad ( the one closed to the motor ) fell off. Can anyone think of any reason why this would just fall off.

Are you saying the brake pad came off, or do you mean the lining seperated from the metal backing?

If thats the case, I have seen it before. Almost sounds like a similar situation to what you were doing, although when it happened to me it was MUCH scarier. I was backing up to my boat slip (you could park in front of the slips) I went to hit my brake and the pedal went to the floor. Yikes! I thought it was going into the drink for sure. I hit the pedal a few times, and it came back up and it stopped. I looked underneath and the lining was cracked in half and it broke loose from the rivets. The backing was still there thank god. That was the only thing from keeping me from going swimming.

The actual pad fell off. I found the clip next to it on the ground. I was grinding for about 4 days, and i figured it just needed a break job, so i did not think much about it. The rotor is gone, there is no machining it, and the rivits on the pad, were mostly rusted out?? This truck is a 2000 F-250, but it does have 129,000 miles on the breaks, i geuss i got a lot of use out of them.

Well, the reason is pretty simple if you have been driving around with the brakes grinding for 4 days.

There is a gap between the rotor and the anchor plate your brake pad sits in. When you wear down the brakes that much, the backing plate of the pad gets pushed into that gap and falls out. Luckily it didnt happen driving down the road, you could have killed someone. Never play around with bad brakes like that.

When they grind like that, It's like when the little light that looks like a gas pump comes on, time to do something about it.

I understand that, but we parked the truck, because of that fact. Money has been a little slow, so i put it off, and started driving my 78 F-100. I had to get a bale of hay, and i figured since it just started, i should be alright, but it turns out i wasn't. Should i try to find performance rotors and pads, or are the stock ones pretty good? They have always worked fine for me, but i am figuring, while i have it apart, should i put something better in there?

You got over 120,000 miles out of the first set and ask if the stock ones are any good? Want to put something better in? Sounds to me like you had the best!

I just figure if i could get that many miles out of stock, could i get more with maybe a set of slotted rotors and such. We do a lot of towing, so it would never hert to have a little more breaking power.

His story reminded me of an old Lemans race I caught on the tube. For 5 laps this Ferrari was SMOKING around the track (we're talking blue billowing thick stuff here ). The announcer says"he must have an engine problem" (duh). 5 laps later the same announcer says "well, at least it quit smoking". 2 seconds later the engine "grenades" all over the track. Second announcer says: "He must of run out of oil"

Just stating the obvious

just be aware that ford puts out two different quality pads.you have to get the more expensive ones to get the ones originally on your vehicle. trust me , this is the voice of experience, ichange my pads on the front of my 98 explorer 3 times a year, and the rears 2 times a year. the originalm pads are the best i have tried, and after ten years i think i have gave just about everyone a shot.
