Hard starting when cold
My stock '96 F250 still runs great with 170K+ miles. Last fall, when the morning temperature dipped below 40 degrees, It would only start after cycling the glow plugs and cranking five or six times. When it got colder, it took even longer. The dealer replaced the glow plug actuator and everything worked fine for the rest of the winter season.
Now it is starting to get chilly again and the same problem has resurfaced. Since the fix last year worked, I am assuming I have the same problem again. What would cause the problem to recur?
My financial situtation has also changed this year from last... How hard is it to replace the glow plug actuator?
An unusual sidenote: Every once in a great while (2-3K miles), the battery idiot light comes on with no change on the ammeter. It only happens when the engine has been running for hours and I'm on a slight incline. It only stays on for a minute or so and then I won't see it again for two-three weeks. I am stymied and obviously can not reproduce it for the dealer.
