All right got a genuine question my smog pump is chirping making noise sounds like a lifter noise/exhaust leak although I took the belt off the motor cranked it ran it motor sounds great so I grabbed the pulley on the smog pump bearing is dry and making a howling noise when I spin it so question why can't I just take off the three bolts that hold the pulley on and then go buy an alternative belt will there be any issues with me doing that and by taking off the pulley is so the alternative belt will clear or will exhaust come through the smog pump and into the engine bay will I need to delete that, and yes I know how to just wondering if I can get away with my idea thanks
I recently read a post that it can where alternator bearings, How? maybe because there is not as much surface area of the belt on the pulley, I don't know.
Its a bugger trying to find the right size belt.
I'd pull the smog unit, fix the bearing, your done.
If you have nothing to compare it with, it's hard to tell if a smog pump is bad.
They are all dry. There is no oil to lubricate anything. They are hollow so they all sound bad if you do not know what a bad one sounds like. Ford makes a bypass bracket/pulley for small blocks. I would not want to remove the pulley because the distance from the alternator to the crank is too long for my liking. I took my pump out and disassembled it. I could not figure out how to put all the pieces back in, so I left them out. Now the pulley just turns nothing. Basically, it was a quick/cheap way so I could deal with getting a bracket later. I've since ordered and received the bracket. Just need to put it on.
