I am currently having great results from my hydroboost setup but I am getting ready to add ac to my 69 f100 with a 302. The easiest/cheapest option i have avaliable to me is to just use the front dress of a 97 explorer( already have). However I am unsure if the explorer pump can handle both power steering and hydroboost. Has anyone tried this yet?
Answering my own question just in case anyone else needs the info. The explorer pump does not work. It will work in higher rpm but not when at idle. An overdrive pulley also didnt work. This is with a stock 302 explorer pump.
What pump do you have on yours? The Sagenal type II pump has more pressure and volume. I see these used on multiple setups. What they do is put a regulator or restricter on the PS side, full pur4ss to the hydro boost.
My set up works just fine. Its the same pump as before a saginaw gm type pump. But since I was going to use a 97 explorer front dress I had to go with an after market bracket that would work. Ended up using a bracket from wild horses 4x4. Originally I asked the question to know if the 97 explorer pump would power our trucks steering so I wouldn't have to go aftermarket set up.
Hydro boost uses very little pump load compared to the steering. Any power steering pump will work fine. The braking assist from hydroboost is SO MUCH BETTER than vac. Vac is not even an option to me.
The hydroboost is in-line with the steering system, no restrictors or anything like that. They operate at same pressure.
I run hydroboost on both my trucks. One has a modified saggy pump and the other a type II
