Engine performance issues

I have a 90 f150 Lariat 5.0 with AOD trans 80,000 miles and the truck is is Australia.
These are the problems i an having at the moment. When i start the truck cold it starts first time then the idl;e will go to 1500 to1800 rpms and if i tap the accelerator pedal it will drop down to a 1000 then to about 700rpms.
After driving for about 30 mins ,if i stop then start the engine it will go to a normal idle or go straight up to 1500rpms and sometimes the idle will be normal then soon as i put the truck into reverse or drive the revs will go up to 1500 rpms .
The engine idle will be great sometimes then other times it will hunt and sometimes stall. Apart from the terrible fuel consumption this truck runs really well.
There is little in the way of parts for this model truck down here so i will be getting parts from Rockautos, has new plugs and leads, rotor, coil and a new rear fuel pump.Changes all the vac lines and pulled off the electical connector for the IACvalve and the engine revs dropped down quite a bit but didn't stall.
RWD only.
Got a OBD1 scanner and i am getting no codes for my problem. So any ideas would be welcome as i really like this truck.

Well no trouble codes makes it more difficult.
How "terrible" is the fuel consumption? Most of these trucks get quite decent economy FOR THEIR AGE.

My 95 f150 with the 5.0 and manual and 3.55 gears gets 14 to 18 mpg (5.9km/l to 7.6km/l) depending on conditions. The colder it is the worse the mpg or km/l. And that is with 328,000 miles( 528,000km roughly) on the engine.

What is your consumption like and other than the parts you said you replaced, what have you inspected?

I suspect distributer timing is off. It should be 8° with the SPOUT plug removed.
Worn out throttle position sensor (TPS) is another common cause for random Idle-ups.
