92 f150 4x4 w/ e4od transmission. My transmission cooler looks pretty busted up. I’m gonna get a new one but does anyone have any input on which ones to avoid or ones they recommend?
Consider pulling one from a JY truck. 10th gen F150 and first gen Expedition have really nicely sized units. Guess 1.5x6x10 area. GMT800 trucks do also. I would assume 3/4 tons also, just I rarely see those here.
I used to go B&M units, but now they are quite spendy. I only do like the stacked plate units.
Depending on what you're doing with the F-150, you may find you don't even one. Put a temp gauge in w/ sender at the test port and see if you ever get above 180F trans temps on average (with just occasional 200F spikes). If not, no aux cooler needed. When the converter locks, they pump like crazy. It's not like trying to cool the old non-locking trans like the C6.
I put a 6.0 cooler on my F250/5.8/E4OD/2WD. I also converted the stock size 5/16 cooler lines to 3/8. Never reads higher than 140F except when I tow my 10klb 5th wheel. It never gets above 180F when I am going over a pass.
It took a bit of butchery to get it to fit, but it does fit.

Just remember, ideal trans temp is around 175F. Tru-cool makes an inline t-stat. I have them on both of my trucks, so I run 180F (@ the test port) all the time........once up to temp of course. Those monster 6.0 coolers are overkill for even the old F450's.
Im not towing anything now but I would want to in the future plus from what ive read about the e4od transmissions I want to make sure I treat it nicely

Just know, treating it nicely also includes letting it come up to ideal operating temp (175F @ test port) too, is all. Just like an engine, a trans has an ideal operating temp too. The E4OD perfect zone @ test port: 170F - 200F and do not fear 225F temp spikes either. The nicest thing you can do to an E4OD is install a temp gauge and monitor trans temps @ test port and strive to keep it at 170-200F all day, no matter what your doing with the truck; towing heavy in July to running empty in February.

I understand. Do you have a recommendation for a cooler? One that will allow it to get to operating temp and keep it there?
95% of my usage is towing. I'm ok with the readings I got. The last thing I need is more stuff to go wrong. Adding a thermostat is just one of those parts that I see no benefit. I suspect if I lived next to Santa, I would change my mind. I'm also willing to live with my decision.
I suspect that most transmissions never get to 175F, since most trips are not long enough to warm up that much transmission fluid. Converters lock up in most gears to get the max mileage out of the fuel used. Can't see transmission temps getting much hotter than what I got on regular 15 minute drives. I do know that the cars I work on, I must drive the car 30 mins at freeway speeds to get the fluid at a temperature needed for a proper level check.

Not without knowing your trans temp reading in July, at your max gross.
I can tell you that I run Tru-cool LPD47391 w/ thermal bypass in both of my HD trucks and I maintain a very close constant 180F @ the test port, year round.
But what are the odds that your F150 would need coolers rated at 40k gross weight too? Probably slim to none.
What if your temp reading in July and August @ the test port, at your max gross is only 200 to 225F? I'm probably going to say, keep your money where it is, and say that you don't need an aux cooler at all, if that's the case and just maintain your trans flushes every 60k miles.
I can recommend a temp gauge right now though!
I run AUTO METER 2640 Z-Series Electric Transmission Temperature Gauge , 2 1/16" w/ Auto Meter 2259 Electric Temperature Sender @ test port.
