Those are for a heat shield that most of these trucks are missing. The shields were built with thin sheet metal and I assume most we're either ripped off or were removed at some point. My current '79 still had it, though was in rough shape and needed some repair work. I've seen one other thread on here recently, @patpat has a build thread going, and his still had it too.

Shouldn't need a cut off wheel, the brackets are bolted on. Just need a wrench to get them off there. That is if you can find the bolt under all that grunge...
After dealing with grunge on my transfer case when I rebuilt it a couple months back. I went and bought a pressure washer to clean most the grunge off the transmission before I disassembled it.

Haha! Thankfully I am in the reassembly process and cleaned up that mess already and addressed the seal leak causing that mess. That was just the best picture I had.
