Hood Latch Strike Plate

Pulled an ‘84 302 2WD AT out of a field after years of sitting there and have it mostly put together and running. I really appreciate all of the posts in the forum, it’s helped a lot getting it back on the road!

I do have a problem with missing parts on the hood for the latch to connect with. Anyone have a photo of their hood they could send so I can see what I’m missing? I’ve searched but can’t seem to find part numbers.

Thanks!

You're missing the piece of spring steel that bolts into the hole on the right. From the picture's perspective, the spring bends away from you and then toward the left, appearing in the center opening. That spring causes the hood to pop open when you pull the hood release inside the cab. When the latching mechanism goes into the middle hole, when the hood is closed, the spring rests on top of the latch, under tension. Pulling the hood release allows the spring to push down on the latch popping the hood upwards. The security latch keeps the hood partially secured so it doesn't flop back on the windshield, if the latch were to fail at speed.

If I was home I'd get a better picture, we're traveling this week.

Just went out and took a shot, we got home a short while ago. Maybe I should look into bending that rusty piece where the safety catch latches in. It is a bit bent up on the front side.

On my '84, there's nothing at all in any of those three openings. Doesn't even have the nutclip as seen in the first picture. Nor are there any marks in the paint like you'd see if something had been removed. The hood latches securely and pops up just fine against the safety catch when you pull the cable.

Build date of 02/84 if that makes any difference.

That compressor is missing the manifolds that the hoses screw to
They do not come with new / rebuilt compressors from the stores.
Also good luck trying to find them on Ebay and if you do they were $150 for the 1 that I found and I think they were different between the sides also.
So if you can get them from the yard do so.

Thanks for the heads up! I just needed to replace the existing compressor which had seized. I’ll pressure test and look for leaks.

I was told there is a place outside Fort Worth that can build hoses relatively inexpensively. We’ll see.

Who needs a/c in Texas anyway?

OK I was going from a York to that type and seen any from the store needed the manifolds and they were big $$$ if you could find them.
As for the used junk yard compressor that is what I did and paid for it a few times down the road.
I went JY for the manifolds mainly but the compressor made noise from day one but worked.
Had the clutch go bad so replaced just the clutch and was working again.
Well the AC stopped cooling and in checking found the used compressor was not compressing
I went new without a clutch and swapped the newish clutch over to it and back in the cool.
This is over a 5 year span like every summer

I have been fighting leaks, some my fault others I just cant find.
I also rebuilt my system when I moved it from a factory AC truck to a non-factory AC truck, firewalls are different so moved the firewall over too.
Like TX NC dont need AC too

I realize that the compressor depicted is wet. It does, however, appear to have a lot of oil residue around/between compressor and clutch. And we're looking at the top. If there is oil there is a leaking seal.

Replacement of the seal is a fitful process. Not because the job is difficult but because there are at least four different seals for the FS-6. The head gaskets are equally difficult to come up with the right ones. The seals and gaskets all look alike but have subtle differences

FWIW, The compressor should be nice and clean. I replaced the seal and gaskets in this compressor four years ago.

Thanks for all the insight on the compressor! I’m going to tests for leaks and the. Probably taken to a shop to be done right.

Still have quite the of things to do before we can get it on the road.
