I have a 92 F-150 ext 4x4 ext cab. It has auto hubs and a manual transmission. Just started hearing a severe grinding like you would be dragging something. It has only happened twice in about a 2 week time frame. It feels like it is in the front end somewhere but i cannot locate it. Have looked under there and the only thing i see is that my differential is leaking a little bit on the back side of the froint diff. Have no idea what this is but it is worrying me. Please help me , thanks.
Hard to diagnose without being there. Some things to check...
Check your brake pad. Remove them and inspect the rotor and pads etc. Sometimes a little rock will get in there and make grinding noises. Also make sure the pads are wearing evenly and the caliper pistons moves easily. Grease the sliding surfaces of the calipers with brake caliper grease. If you don't know what I mean here, have a buddy explain it to you and show you where, easy to do but helps to have guidence. Check the back brakes too.
Rotate the rotor while the wheel is off. It should turn with slight drag and not make any nasty sounds.
You might need to grease the locking hub. Or when is the last time you greased the bearings?
Does the noise go away when you lightly apply brakes, or does it get worse? Put your tranny in neutral and coast, does the noise go away? Shift to different gears, does the noise change pitch? Put in in 4WD, if you can and see if the sound changes.
Thanks Jim. Will give it a try. Dont know when the bearings were greased. Just bought the truck a few weeks ago. Was worried it was something in the drive train.
