I'm scratching my head on this and about to develop an ulcer! I put a new 22 gallon rear tank in the 86 E350 5.8l with an engine mounted fuel pump. I replaced the sender and the selector valve also. The rear sender ohmed out perfectly so I know it's good. Now the problem. The fuel gauge shows empty when I switch it to the rear tank, it reads fine on the front tank. I can hear the selector valve switching so I thought I could just run on the rear tank until it starts to stall then switch to the front tank. To make sure the rear tank was feeding fuel, I decided to run the front tank empty then switch to the rear. The fuel gauge on the front tank has been reading below empty for hours while I let it idle. It seems like it won't run out of gas. Is there a possibility that I'm drawing fuel from the rear tank even though the switch is set on the front tank? If so, is this common or do I deeper rooted problems? Any help would be appreciated.
Get a 86 EVTM for your van
It will show the circuit
You have a break somewhere in a wire or your new selector valve is no good
Start with an ohmmeter and the schematic in the EVTM
Thanks for the reply. I started testing the sender wiring from the tank end and I think the pigtail on the top of the tank is not getting a good connection. Now the problem is finding a replacement. None of the junkyards around here have one and so far I haven't been able to find one online. I think maybe I'll post it on the forum and someone might have an idea where I can get one or a hack for connecting the wires another way.
