Is it the Ford performance "top loader" from a '60s car?
Or an OEM type top loaded, top shifted transmission?
The stick will come out of the older OEM type, but it depends on what it is as to how the cap comes off.
The '60s trans may require the whole shifter to come off. Some had removeable sticks, some did not.
Can you pull the boot and flooring back to see more details?

On the ones that I have the shifter handle is not removable from the shifter
To remove the whole thing Just remove the 2 mounting bolts and the nuts from the 3 shifter shafts noting the orientation of the 3 little tabs because you can reverse them.

It appears that more information would be helpful. Do you know the make/model of your transmission? As already indicated, transmissions other than the actual toploader were mistakenly referred to as toploaders.
