I recently developed some pinging under load and acceleration in my '88 F350 460. I was under the impression that I'd turn the distributor one way or the other, but I can't get it to move.
Can anyone tell me how to set the timing? I think it's EFI IV or something like that. I hear I may need to disconect something to adjust it properly but I still don't know what's going on - things were simpler on my old 428...
Timming it should be the same as the old stuff. just loosen the bolt that retains the distributor in place. I think it is 1/2" head but can not rember. you will need a distributor wrench to loosen it.
especially on a newer unit like that, so much stuff in the way. hahaha other than that the timing is the same way I think it is
somewhere between TDC and -4 Deg BTDC I am not sure on the
newer 460's I on ly know the earlier ones 68 through mid 70's.
what gas are you using as well? I know the older 460's require
premie gas or it will ping like a ******* as well.
Shouldn't this be in the '385' forum? Anyways, if its a matter of your dizzy being stuck, spray some PB Blaster or anything similar around the base, let it soak, then try to rotate. Sometimes some gentle taps with a rubber mallet will be needed to persuade it.
If its suddenly pinging where none existed before it makes me wonder if there is something else wrong that retarding the ignition will simply hide....like your fi running lean or bad gas just for examples.
