Have it rebuilt or consider a performance once since in there. I have a Fluidampr, some guys rock the ATI.
Just had my 4.9 one rebuilt at Damper Doctor. Ran about $230? Door to door. Unsure if MC or IH has these new, worth a look first. My old one was delaminated and very concerning.
Sorry to spend more of your cash but could be major failure waiting to tear an expensive engine to bits.
for sure, I ordered a new one from riffraff it’s sitting in the box waiting to go on
Wish some good option available for the 4.9, there were not. Just garbage Chyna made ones (read: junk rubber) so not risking it. Could not find a spare either so I had to risk it in the mail.
One day I'll pull the engine from my jalopy. Block will probably split in two with me luck.
yea it looks orange in the picture but it’s a gold color in real life.
it’s a ceramic coating that’s meant to help control heat transfer into the piston,EGT control was my #1 goal in this engine build. The ceramic coating acts as a thermal barrier keeping the pistons from heating up as much, reflecting heat back off the piston into the cylinder and out the exhaust.
Nothing more annoying than pulling a hill with the 5er and the high EGT alarm going off.
Since I got the pistons back and I’ve had plenty of time to look things up with this winter weather… I sent total seal a message to see what a set of gapless 2nd rings would cost and their thoughts on potential benefits… idk if I’ll pull the trigger on it but figured it may be worth exploring.
Now would be the time to go with all the fancy merbobs youre contemplating. Never a more appropriate time then when the engines all apart. At least that's how all my projects snowball lol
Well I decided to just stick with the rings from Ford that came with my pistons. Total seal wanted another 500$ for rings and would cause more delays in getting the engine finished at the machine shop. I figure if the originals lasted 300k plus, then these new OEM rings ought to do the same. Plus I’m pretty consistent with maintenance and that ought to extend life even more.
got everything dropped off at the machine shop to finish the block work and get the rotating assembly balanced this past Tuesday…. Hoping in another 4 weeks to get everything back.
need to make another riffraff order for the oil jets, another valve cover gasket, and various sensors but lil tight on funds right this second.
