Distributor Questions

I was finishing up my header installation when I decided to change out the distributor cap and rotor. Not thinking about it a whole lot I pulled all the wires, put the new stuff in place and used the book to rewire it. when I went to start it, it almost didn't and ran like crap when it did catch. Now before I swapped out the new stuff it ran OK, just had slight hesitation when you first hit the gas a little. I knew something was wrong so I checked it by the book again. The wires were by the book but didn't seem like the way they were when I pulled it apart. To make a long story short I re-wired the cap one notch off and it runs good again, what gives??? Is the distributor in wrong and what will it hurt to run it the way it is?

If I had to guess the po put in the dizzy a tooth off and was too lazy to pull it back out and do it right so he just put the plugs on a one off too. When you did it by the book it caused it to be off. It won't hurt it to run the way you have it now...but can't you rotate the dizzy enough to line it up right?

You can put #1 anyplace you want on the dist. There is NO law against it. The motor will run as long as the firing order is correct. I never did pay much attention to where #1 was, as long as I point the rotor to it, it WILL run.

pro. got it right, someone put it together wrong and just moved the wires. Don't lose any sleep over it.
