Looking to purchase an installer and I'm not sure if I need a "long reach" installer or if it actually matters?
Specifically for the 460 engine as I see some kits don't include the right hardware for older vehicles now I guess?
I would buy the long reach if you were unsure. You can get a loaner kit from Autozone, and if you like it and it works, you can just keep it, since they make you buy it, and if you return it they give you your money back. That is how their loaner program works. The only problem I see with the long reach is the radiator may get in the way if the installer is too long.

yea if I can't get a surefire answer here or there I'll go the parts store route, it's just an out of the way trip.

I have never used a installer tool. I just carefully align the keyway(you have to do this with the tool also) and use a dead blow to drive it on a little bit, till a couple of threads catch with the bolt that holds it in the center with a thinner washer. Draw it on with that, change the washer out with the thicker one midway though installing it, and tighten it home. Never had a problem.
Installer... they make a tool for that. I've always used a hammer, and block of 2x4.
don't want to screw up anything. I know a lot of ppl have done it, according to internet posts at least... It isn't the recommended way of doing it, just like using the crank bolt and pressing it on that way.
Easy way to yank threads out. Although I'm more inclined to do that than smack it. my luck is if it can go wrong it will. so I don't try and press my luck.
Found the kit that works on 7.5L I picked up mac tools TP1330A, worked pretty well and felt better about it as well.
