Got engine in. 73 302. I used the long bar that is suppose to drive the oil pump shaft, pre oil but when I attach the 2 items together, it's long long enough to engage. Now I have not measured yet the heck shaft yo make sure it's the right length but due to the umbrella thing on next shaft it just does not go down far enough to engage. Any ideas...maybe I have therong size, still have to messure that.

The oil pump shaft goes in from the bottom, before bolting on the oil pump and oil pan! The clip end of the shaft goes towards the top. It is there to prevent the shaft from pulling up and out of the pump when pulling the distributor.
So I didn't do that then my only alternative is to take off the umbrella and just put the shaft in the hole...I just will or possibly never pull distributor or I have the chance of losing driveshaft into oil pan like I've heard a ton of people talking about...is that the situation im in?
