wipers not working

ever since ive had my truck, ive had a little problem with my wipers. they work good most of the time and then everynow and then they will just stop in mid wipe. you have to turn the switch on and off and things like that and then they will come back on. also, i dont know if it just seems this way or what but they seem to do it worse in a real heavy rain. is is my motor brushes goin bad or something or is it just my switch?

What year truck is this? Have you checked for 12 volts at your power pin? My 82 F100 had the connections at the wiper motor all full of corrosion. I only had 6 pins to replace because I only have high and low setting. Write back with some info. Thanks Fred

its a 1970 with only high and low. ive had the switch off a couple of times when i painted it and things and it didnt seem to have any noticable corrosion on it. they work fine a lot of the times, but its annoying when its raining really hard and all of a sudden they quit

Well if they quit while its raining really hard, it sounds like to me that you are getting water on the connections under the hood at the wiper motor. I know on my truck there is a hood to cowl seal that helps to keep water from dripping inside the engine compartment. Does your truck have this seal? Try sealing your connection at the wiper motor with a plastic bag or something to keep the moisture out of it, I did that on mine and its worked fine ever since.

The wiper motor on these trucks is UNDER the dash, nice and dry.

I would check all power connections. Sounds like you are losing it somewhere. When you turn them off, they auto return. So, if they stop mid stream, then you are losing power somehow. Have not looked at mine in years. Is there a separate ground wire? It is rubber mounted for noise, so I figure there should be a ground wire present.

ill look about a ground wire on it and make sure. i dont know if that owuld be it though because it never has been off and would that cause it to stop mid wipe and then come back on when you turn the switch on and off a couple of times?

Mine did the sam thing the one time I drove it in the rain a couple years ago. My solution was to not drive in the rain any more.

I figured it had to be a bad motor and intended to swap it out, but like I said, I haven't driven in the rain ever since so it hasn't been high priority.

Good Luck.

I had the same problem in my '67. A replacement wiper motor, an hour under the dash and a few scrapes and scratches and the wipers work like new!

I would just replace the motor.
I had 2 that did just that and started to F**** up all the other electrical components on my F-250.

When I took apart the last one, one of the magnets had become unglued and attached itself to the rotor. It worked fine sometimes, usually on low speed but when you cranked it up it would stall or slow or both........a little scary when your doing 60 or 70 in the fast lane in rush hour traffic in a rainstorm.
If your broke like me, and handy you can take it apart and check it out.

The one before that was just corroded with rust and mud and crap and I gingerly took it apart and cleaned and sprayed it with electrical contact cleaner spray and it ran fine after that.

Good luck,
Jay
