I have a '94 Ranger with a 4.0 pushrod engine and every so often while driving the engine quits, like I shut off the key, for an instant then starts again and runs fine until the next time. It's been doing it for a couple of years and I haven't done anything to it yet. It does it several times a day when I drive it which isn't very often.
Check that your ignition switch is not moving a bit. As the parts wear the can lose their retainer strength, which allows the moving parts to move.
Mine was such that it quit running when I released it from START. If I held it in place, it was fine. New switches are low cost, but you have to remove some
tamper proof screws to take it out.
One other thing to consider is loose connections or a wire that has gotten damaged or is starting to fail due to flexing for 30 years.
