Yeah. Wish there were some ungaudy gauges that would just pop into these consoles like they belong there.
And, I think you're right about that third coil, but all the write-ups I've seen referred to them as "dual-core" or "two windings" or something similar, so that's what I call them.
I had an early 70's Capri that had an oil tube to the gauge in the dash, Broke it one day and didn't know what it was since it was hollow and dry. This was before I became an automotive super genius. lol Couldn't figure out why the floor and my shoes were covered in oil, After a couple of trips back and forth to work the engine stopped turning. Only then did I realize what I had done. Sealed off the tube, put some oil back in it, and got a few more miles out of it before it finally quit. Good times.

They make the gauge pod that fits over the column where your emergency flasher button is, they also make the pods for the A pillar. Frankly if you are serious about gauges, use a tri gauge pod mount ,because Trans temp is a MUST if you have an automatic like an E4OD especially! And Then you can have a tach (if you dont have one), a voltage gauge with numbers, you could have an Air fuel ratio gauge if you cared about that, you could also install an additional temp gauge if you were looking for redundancy or desired to know head temp from block temp or t-stat housing , you could also use the gauge spot to put any number of things. They also make aftermarket clusters now, (finally, took a few years) but im unsure if they come with custom gauges or if they just take the factory inputs and display. https://newvintageusallc.mybigcommer...ries-cfr-blue/
This appears to use its own sender, and by the looks id venture its probably stepper motor and not coil based. Meaning the gauges are more consistent in movement and are very precise, they snap to their reading quicker and dont "bounce" the same way coil gauges do. But im guessing that, this listing doesnt appear to state that.
I like the look of this one becuase of the blue night time view, there is a way to tie the factory dimmer into the LED dimmer so you only need to use one dimmer switch, if desired, and there appears to be a auxillary input add on that lets you either cycle or chose what temperature is displayed on the temp gauge, possibly meaning it can support both trans and engine just need to cycle between.
Nice. I hadn't seen those. The critic in me wonders why they didn't put the small gauges in the center. Or go with four smaller gauges, or maybe with two on one side and two on the other. Seems out of balance, but that's probably just me.

I suppose with ABS plastic sheet about that dimension you could place them however you want, hopefully enough give in the wire lengths
Other placements can look nice in the right truck (A pillar, under/over the dashboard, etc.), and they do. Maybe I just need to look into them again. It's been a few years since I went down that rabbit hole.

since i have obd2 I cheat and just use live data to view my trans temp and engine temp and voltage in nice readouts
And since i dont have a tach, its a way to see my rpm,
But if i didnt, id either have forscan in use a lot or id get some of the pods on the pillar or a full compliment in the cluster that wouldnt be stock
I can't remember if my '93 F-250 had three or four pins. As mentioned, I just jumpered the resistor and used a real (variable resistance) sender. It doesn't go above 3/4 scale when cold (old 7.3 IDI) but definitely past half scale...
