Tranny Problems
I'm thinking of bying a 1991 Explorer. The guy tells me his son filled the automitic transmission completly full of fluid and tried to drive it....now it doesn't go forward only reverse. Does anyone know what might of broke in the tranny? Would it be worth rebuilding or just get a new one?

Overfilling will not keep it from moving. You can easily overfill these with about 7 extra quarts. I assume you can get this cheap. This is an easy transmission to rebuild at home, not that you can't make mistakes. Still, you will probably end up with a better rebuild than most shops if you have the time. If you have it rebuilt, don't accept less than a three year warranty. Even the worst rebuild will last a year. Unfortunantly a lot of them don't last more than a year and a half. Does it work in D instead of OD? Will it work in manual low or 2? How does the fluid look and smell?

I don't know if it will drive in Manual 1 or 2. I haven't been over to see it yet. They want $700 for the truck. Its just that I don't have a clue about automitic transmissions. I've never had to open one up. I'm pretty sure I can handle it....Just trying to get some tips. Would I need any special tools? Also do you know what transmission it has in it?

You have an A4LD
You can get a manual(s) for $16 at www.bulkpart.com as well as the parts you need. There are two manuals, one for just upgrades to the later years. You can learn a lot from reading "Anybody rebuild an A4LD" the 50+ posts at:
