Over the last couple of weekends, I got the Cardo shell refinished and added some marker lights. Also an interior light. Pretty happy with the results but I still need to paint the roof… I ran out of Wimbledon White paint on the front, back and sides after three coats, followed by two coats of a semi-gloss clear coat. So it’s not quite done, but you can’t really see the roof without getting on a ladder. But I’ll get to it. Not bad though, for a rattle-can spruce-up job!
Great looking truck you have there. Love to period correct style you did on the thuck. Enjoy it as it sits and the camper looks good on the truck IMOP.
Looks good. How do you like the steps on the cab? Been thinking about putting something on mine since my wife can’t get in without something to step up on.
Thanks guys! Always appreciate the feedback, good OR bad… still learning, even at my age! Yes, trying to keep it mostly period-correct in appearance. Spent maybe 5 years hunting down the camper shell. Short bed shells this vintage are seemingly pretty rare.
As for the steps, yes they are very nice. My wife is the same way, that she needs something to step up on to get in. You could probably tell that these are the later-model ‘73-‘79 era “glide-out” steps, that pull out with the door. I just added a set of ‘48-era step plates to them for aesthetics (I’ve cleaned and repainted the Ford emblem since this pic was taken; they look much better now). But the steps are great! Highly recommended.
I would love to find a period correct shell for my '79 F150 but I haven't seriously looked for one since I have a whole lot of other things to get done on that truck first.
I really like those steps, I have never seen those before. I am curious if they would work okay in my climate. Lots of snow and ice and I would be worried of those getting packed full of slush from driving and freezing closed then damaging my door when I tried open it. Great concept though.
<Found the cap in Mass...and it still had a key for the lock.....fits perfectly>
Nice… that shell really works! Are you going to paint the gold (like maybe in the darker green of the truck), or leave it in the gold? Also, do the marker lights work?

Thanks! The steps are actually for the ‘73-‘79 era trucks, like yours. I hadn’t thought about the snow and ice situation; I haven’t had any issues with them thus far in the snow, but then we don’t get Montana-grade snow in the Northern California foothills, so you may have a point as they do fold up right underneath the floorboards. But the steps are really nice.
