Oil pump drivesaft

I have a 73 302 I'm building. Got most of the engine assembled. Oil pump drive shaft..new hardened shaft ingot gas a washer/lock on it...which way does drive shaft go in.

The washer goes toward the end that sticks into the hole in the block.

The reason for that is the washer will hit the block casting, preventing the shaft from pulling up out of the pump and falling back down into the oil pan when the distributor is removed (that tends to be a major 'oopsie' )

OOOH - Nice to know - thanks. I did see a bunch of people talking about dropping the shaft into the oil pan..guessing that does not flow out the drain hole too easily...ha
