Howdy folks,
3-4 years ago the ARB was the best locker on the market. Is that still the way to go for my '79 F-250 4x4 or is there a new kid on the block that is stealing all the thunder?
Thanks,
Pat
ARB is still an awesome locker, there are some other out there, not sure if there are any for you application tho. For example eaton makes the E locker.. There are some others out there, just gotta look around.
These electrac selectables caught my eye. http://www.tractech.com/Products.htm
I really like tractech products. A set of limited slip / lockers! What a combo. Those limited slips will take you a long ways and then you've got detroit lockers at the push of a button. Yeow! They're pricey but they'd be the last units you would ever have to buy. A pair of these on my F250 crewcab is my current fantasy.

Probably the best combo for a street driven truck is having the limited slip/locker unit in the rear axle, and the open diff/locker unit in the front axle (like an ARB). I have an ARB in my front axle, I like using the open diff in the snow and areas where I just don't need the locker. I prefer the open instead of a limited slip up front. Out back having an open stinks so limited slip to locker is the best.
I've got a limited slip in the rear that I swapped in when I built the truck and it works great but I'd sure like an ARB in the front for those times when the moose is on the other side of this great ditch with a road that I can use if I can make it across. Sounds to me like ARB is the way to go.
There are times when I don't want limited slips on both ends and with the ARB I can have that.
Thanks,
Pat

This really depends........front or rear axle? Lockout hubs?? If you are wanting something for the front and have hubs, then why not put a full locker in the front (to save a little $$) and a selectable locker in the back? ARB is still a good locker, just $$ to have installed and a little time consuming to do yourself. Detroit's Electrac locker is the newest out there.
My ARB was installed by a shop...cost 600 bucks. I already took the diff out of the truck for him. Insurance company payed for it so I didnt do it myself or I would have.
The jury is still out on the Detroit Elactrac IMO. I've heard of more failures than I've heard of happy owners. It's a great concept though.
Your mainstream choices appear to be either the ARB or an Ox locker. Both have a reputation for being tough as nails. I've heard fewer complaints about the Ox since it's cable operated and doesn't have air lines and o-rings to leak. On top of that, the Ox locker comes with a cool new diff cover. When it comes down to it, either one of these would make me happy.
Thanks Jeremy,
I was just going to post for info. on OX and whether they were happening or not. Couldn't get into their site and seemed to run into blanks about contacting them. Hope they get it together. Looks like a good unit to me.
Ox has been on the verge of going under for a while now. "Rumor" has it they are "restructuring" and will be up and running soon. That was about six months ago. While the Ox is a great unit, I wouldn't run one on the risk of not being able to get replacement parts. As of now, I'd still go with ARB as the company has a proven track record as does the unit itself. I agree with Mustang that its best to have a selectable unit up front, and a locker in the rear. Or dual selectables if your pocketbook can afford it. It also depends on how much off-roading you do, vs how much on road drivng you do on slick surfaces.
Too bad. Looks like a good unit and I kinda like the lock-by-wire concept. That is a proven concept too. Oh well. Maybe they'll get their act together and maybe they won't. ARB is certainly not a hardship and then you've got a compressor unless you use a dive bottle or some other air tank.
Has anybody ever put hubs on the rear that would allow for open or locker rear? Maybe it's not even possible. I do tons of work but have the mechanical aptitude of a snail.
anyone know how that ausie locker would do in the snow in a front diff of my truck? they claim it is sensitive enough to act normal in snow. any ideas?
From what I understand, when it's open, it's open and when it's locked, it's locked. Some of the logging trucks have them on 3 or 4 driving axles and they work well there.
